Mining and concentrating

Kazakhmys operates 16 underground and open pit mines across Kazakhstan. In 2011, the company mined 33 million tonnes of copper ore, which is processed in our 10 concentrators. Kazakhmys also produces and sells significant quantities of zinc, silver and gold as by-products. Extracting value at every step Kazakhmys is responsible for 90% of all copper produced in Kazakhstan. The company's integrated structure, owning and managing everything from mining to production, has helped make Kazakhmys one of the world's most flexible and lowest-cost copper producers.

Smelting and refining

Kazakhmys operates two smelting and refining plants, which smelt copper concentrate to produce copper plates (anodes). We then send the anodes to our electro-refineries to produce copper cathode with a minimum copper content of 99.95%.

Kazakhmys operates mines and concentrators in three regions:

  • The Zhezkazgan Region is our largest mining and concentrating region, contributing around 70% of Group mined ore. The region consists of seven mines and three concentrators.
  • The Central Region contributes around 15% of Group mined ore, and consists of four mines and three concentrators. It was formed in 2011 from the combination of Karaganda Region and Balkhash Complex.
  • The East Region contributes around 14% of Group mined ore, and consists of six underground mines and four concentrators.

Focused on copper

In 2011, Kazakhmys mined 33 million tonnes of copper ore, with an average grade (copper content) of 1.01%. The company crushes the ore in several stages and treats it in one of the ten concentrators. The concentrate then passes to the smelting and refining team for processing through to finished metal.

Kazakhmys is more than one of the world's leading natural resources groups. Our 50% ownership of the Ekibastuz power station makes us one of the largest domestic power providers in Kazakhstan.

Energy
Supplying Kazakhstan and Russia
Ekibastuz is the largest power station in Kazakhstan. In 2011, 90% of Ekibastuz GRES-1’s electricity sales volumes were made to external customers based in Kazakhstan, with the remaining output exported to Russia. Ekibastuz GRES-1 has five turbine units in operation and a capacity of 2,500 MW. A sixth unit will be reintroduced by the end of 2012, increasing capacity to 3,000 MW, and by 2017 the plant should have eight units in operation, with a total capacity of 4,000 MW. The upgrade is funded from the internal cash flows generated by Ekibastuz GRES-1.
